Transvision - Co-Author Cyrille De Laleu

August 19-29, 2004 Nooderzon Festival - Groningen - Netherlands TSCHUMI PAVILION (TSCHUMI PAVILJOEN)

At the center of a “black box,” a 4-meter spiral is drawn on the floor. On entering, the viewer hears a voice inviting them to follow the spiral to the rhythm of a metronome. By following the instructions, the viewer triggers an immersive soundscape influenced by their progress along the path. If they omit certain instructions, a voice message informs them that the experience cannot continue. If they conscientiously follow the path, the sound progression culminates in a shrill, almost unbearable sound and stops abruptly when the person leaves the central point.

Simultaneously, three “surveillance” cameras capture three different moments in time and space as the viewer moves through the installation. The images captured at the entrance, on the spiral, and at the center are transferred to the Tschumi Pavilion, “the glass box,” and arranged in a dynamic triptych. Finally, upon leaving the room, a monitor displays the accumulated video layers of everyone who followed the spiral (including the image of the last spectator).

By involving the spectator in a non-linear process, Transvision offers a reflection on our relationship to time and space complicated by technologies. This experiment with automated editing, composition, and presentation methods aims to question the spectator's point of view and at the same time offers a commentary on the potentially abusive use of digital media.
